SAFETY LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND CAPABILITY BUILDING

With health and safety at the heart of everything Ørsted does, continuous skills and capability building are critical.

Building Hornsea 2, the world’s biggest offshore wind farm, approximately 90 kilometers off the Yorkshire coast in the harsh and demanding North Sea, safety was of paramount importance from the outset.

Ørsted was determined to develop an innovative and impactful safety programme as part of Hornsea 2’s “Plan, Care, Communicate” philosophy.

Combining interactive experiences, film, live action exercises and facilitated discussion, the programme’s hypothetical scenario examines the build-up to a fatal incident on a load-out operation and its consequences.

Participants say the training is incredibly realistic and drives home both the impact of decision making and the importance of individual responsibility when it comes to safety.

“Our Thrive programme ensures that all Ørsted employees and contract partners working on the project understand the implications of safe and unsafe behaviour first hand in a safe yet real-world scenario,” said Patrick Harnett, programme director for Hornsea 2 “The Thrive centre is not only a legacy for Hornsea 2, but a powerful example of innovation and excellence in the Humber’s rapidly developing renewables sector.”

Delivered at Thrive, a purpose-built training facility in Immingham, the safety leadership programme has been so successful that it has now been made available to external companies working in similar high-risk environments who want to empower their workforce to be safety leaders.

“Thanks to Ørsted’s vision and investment, ATT has been able to design a ground-breaking safety leadership centre of excellence on the Humber,” said Adam Christopher, co-director of ATT. “The centre is now available to any organisation in the renewables, maritime and related sectors who shares our belief that, when it comes to safety, only the best will do.”

COLLABORATING FOR GROWTH PLAYBOOK

In an effort to bridge the gap between theoretical safety training and the reality of the offshore working environment, Ørsted worked with safety leadership specialists, Active Training Team (ATT), to develop the award-winning Thrive programme.

The ground-breaking course uses creativity and technology to create an immersive, experiential – and memorable – experience, which goes above and beyond the traditional classroom/ online based training that industries tend to use.
